This is the biggest change in Sixth Edition. Dice pools can be modified with more or fewer dice depending on circumstances, but it’s far less frequent than other editions thanks to the Edge System. Also, if at least half of the dice on any roll are a 1, you have rolled a Glitch which is a setback of some sort (this can happen whether or not you succeed on the test). You roll a number of six-sided dice equal to a Skill and its linked Attribute (Agility + Firearms to attack, Magic + Sorcery to cast spells, etc.) Every 5 or 6 is considered a Hit, and to succeed you need to get more hits than the Threshold for the task or, if it’s opposed, more hits than the other character. Task resolution is handled by a D6 Dice Pool system. The same goes for Qualities (positive and negative options for characters similar to feats or advantages/disadvantages), which are only mentioned in the Quick Start for their background value with no mechanics attached (though it appears they’re calculated into skill and attribute values). There are also 2-3 knowledge skills for each character, but that’s not really pointed out anywhere in the Quick Start rules so it’s mostly just for background in this. The pregens start with between five and nine different skills and none of them start with a rating higher than 6. It also seems as though some other skills have been combined, as Con seems to have replaced a lot of the social-related skills. For example, rather than having separate skills for each different type of gun (pistol, SMG, assault rifle, sniper rifle, etc.) or different type of melee weapon (edged, bludgeoning, unarmed), there are just two skills: Firearms and Close Quarters. Skills range from 1-9 and the skill list has been greatly reduced in number from previous editions. Attribute ratings typically range from 1-6, though the pregens include one character with a 7 and another with an 8. Every character has the special attributes Essence and Edge, while magically-active characters will also have Magic (for Shadowrun fans, the Quick Start doesn’t make any mention of technomancers at all). The main attributes are Body, Agility, Reaction, Strength, Willpower, Logic, Intuition, and Charisma. But first, I want to talk about what hasn’t changed.Ĭharacters have eight main attributes and two to three special attributes. A good deal of the crunchy mechanical nature of Shadowrun has been shifted to the new Edge System, which I’ll go into later. In fact, the Quick Start rules are only 24 pages long and well-organized by section so you’re not flipping around too much the first time you’re reading through trying to figure out stuff. The rules themselves are, in fact, streamlined from previous editions. There’s also a giant poster map, one side featuring the two locations from the adventure and the other side a map of Seattle, the game’s default setting. There are also 12 dice included which is enough for the Beginner Box characters if the group passes them around, but you’re going to want more dice (particularly for the Face pregen who has a dice pool of 14 for some skills). The purple-on-black design makes these about a 7/10 on the readability scale. They fall into that category of dice that look awesome but aren’t quite as readable as standard dice for playing. The dice are the same style as Catalyst has sold for years. The deck of reference cards are a bit smaller than standard poker size, but are incredibly thick stock with a strong coating, meaning they’re unlikely to bend and may be resistant to modest liquid spills (but don’t hold me to that). The character dossiers won’t really work as character sheets on their own because they’re also on the thick, glossy paper which means they can’t be written on by anything other than a felt-tip pen or a marker, but they are good for references for each of the characters. The pages are thick and glossy, the cardstock covers are sturdy, and the binding tight so it won’t fall apart if you look at it funny. The two rulebooks – the Quick Start Rulebook and the included adventure “Battle Royale” – are very nice quality. Griffin McElroy also created original compositions to enhance the show's production. "Déjà Vu" by Mort Garson (from the album Ataraxia: The Unexplained) served as the primary theme song for The Adventure Zone during the Balance Arc, as well as various interstitials and backing tracks. Additionally, three special episodes were released over the course of the campaign, titled The "The Adventure Zone" Zone, and these act as "an informal chat show" discussing the game. The campaign concluded with Episode 69 in August 2017. Griffin McElroy served as the show's primary host and Dungeon Master for the show's first campaign, later titled the Balance Arc. Starting that December, The Adventure Zone was then expanded into its own podcast on the Maximum Fun network, releasing biweekly. The first of these recordings was initially released as an experimental MBMBaM episode entitled The Adventure Zone on August 18, 2014, to cover for Justin's paternity leave. The set came with the module The Lost Mine of Phandelver, which served as the basis for the first few sessions. The McElroy brothers would ultimately begin playing with their father Clint in the summer of 2014, using the newly released Starter Set for the fifth edition of D&D, which was released that July. During the 97th episode in May 2012, the brothers answered a question about a Dungeons & Dragons game-which Justin called "The Adventure Zone". In 2010, the McElroy brothers launched their flagship podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me, an advice podcast which joined the Maximum Fun network in 2011. Regular episodes of the podcast feature the family solving puzzles, fighting enemies, and leveling up their characters in a series of cinematic and humorous encounters. The show is distributed by the Maximum Fun network and hosted by brothers Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy, and their father Clint McElroy. Nobunaga was now able to concentrate a little more on the administration of his realm. The Buddhist power was finally and irrevocably broken by 1580. During the next four years, Nobunaga’s forces steadily pressed back their opponents. Also in 1576, fighting again broke out and Nobunaga was hard pressed one more time by daimyo, especially those from western Japan, and by the Buddhists with headquarters at Osaka. The castle was a major cultural statement as well as an announcement of Nobunaga’s status of hegemon throughout the realm. He began building a residential castle at Azuchi in Omi province in 1576 just north of Musa, a post-town on the Nakasendo. Conflict continued with the Buddhists for a period, but military defeat and slaughter of believers subdued them by 1575.īy this time, Nobunaga controlled about one third of Japan. By 1573 the Osaka daimyo were vanquished, Shingen had died and the shogun was driven into exile for collaboration with Nobunaga’s enemies. Nobunaga then acted to take most of the shogun’s powers into his own hands.įrom 1570 to 1573, Oda was hard pressed by a large coalition including various daimyo in the Osaka area (important as a commercial and firearms manufacturing center), Takeda Shingen, the shogun and the Buddhist True Pure Land sect (Jodo Shinshu). In 1568, he supported the claims of Ashikaga Yoshiaki to the Muromachi shogunate and took control of Kyoto. This was a large step in the direction of Kyoto which was the center of power. By 1567, Nobunaga added Mino province to his base in Owari province, moving his capital to present-day Gifu. One result was that an Imagawa retainer, Tokugawa Ieyasu, became in 1562 a firm ally of Nobunaga with great benefit to both. In 1560, Nobunaga defeated the Imagawa clan which was threatening him in the east. After succeeding to his father’s position in 1551, Nobunaga spent a decade defeating and killing several family rivals, including a brother, before firmly controlling his inheritance. His father was daimyo of a fief with its castle at Nagoya on the Tokaido highway. Nobunaga was of middling status in the feudal hierarchy of the day. You can combine it with your reservation package, or purchase your $15 ticket for all-day at any time during the day of your visit. You do have more options for purchasing Genie +. It’s the same convenient process, and you can opt to use the complimentary Disney Genie 3 attraction passes or you can add to them for the additional charge. WDW News points out that you can purchase Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane through your My Disney Experience mobile app. At Walt Disney World, you will have the option of PhotoPass downloads with unlimited access. For example, at Disney World, you get AR lenses as a perk, for experiencing augmented reality views. Different benefits for the two amusement parksĪnother difference is that each park will offer its perks that go with Disney Genie +and Lightning Lane. Don’t let this discourage you because it’s the same fee that was previously charged for the MaxPss system which previously operated for line skipping at this park. The cost of Genie + will be $5 higher, costing $20 instead of $15. When the service does come online, there will be over 15 rides that are eligible for Lightning Lane reservations. The service has already been implemented at Walt Disney World, but it is not yet operational at Disneyland. It’s essential to know that Disney Genie + will apply to both Walt Disney World, Florida park, and Disneyland in California. When you see the term Lightning Lane, it is merely the replacement name for the previous FastPass, so don’t let that confuse you. Genie + provides you with the option to reserve a set on over 40 attractions applicable at Walt Disney World. This is the main difference between the two, but there is more. Unlike FastPass, with Genie +, you must pay an additional $15 per day in addition to the park admission fee. You get the same line-skipping reservations as you did with FreePass, but one big difference is that you can opt for the Disney Genie + Lightning Lane. Standard Disney Genie does not cost you anything more than the price of park admission. It is a complimentary service that works pretty much the same way that FastPass did. You will see it marketed as Disney Genie+ with Lightning Lane. What is Disney Genie?ĭisney Genie is the replacement system for FastPass. With this option off the table can you still skip the lines to gt on your favorite rides without a wait? The answer is yes, but the new system is a lot different than the old one. The Points Guy offers a sneak peek at the new system and confirms that as of October 19, 2021, the FastPass system is over and no longer exists. What are the differences between Disney FastPass and Disney Genie? You must obtain additional Fast Passes by making your reservations through the Walt Disney World app, or by visiting a park kiosk and making the reservation in person. You can get extra FastPasses beyond the 3 issued on your admission ticket, you can acquire extra passes one at a time, until closing on the same day, if there are still slots that have not yet been reserved. This is an incentive to purchase your tickets on your My Disney Experience account early. You may not be able to find an available FastPass slot if you wait too long. Some of the more popular attractions fill up with other FastPass holders. You are reserving spots on an attraction or ride. Why do you need to book early?įastPasses are reservations. One is for FastPass holders and the other is for the general public. When you go to claim your reservation you will see two lines. You must link your tickets with your reservations to a My Disney Experience account and book them in advance. If not, you can secure your passes 30 days from the time of your visit. You must buy the ticket at least 60 days before you plan to visit if you’re staying at a Disney hotel. When you purchase your admission tickets digitally, you can reserve up to three FastPass attractions for skipping wait lines. It’s a perk that comes with the admission ticket. There is no charge for the FastPasses with payment of regular admission. Those who purchase the FastPass tickets digitally can choose up to three attractions a day for which they may skip the long wait lines. Travel and Leisure explains that FastPass is a system of digital ticketing. 9 Final thoughts The outgoing Disney Fast Passīefore we compare the pros and cons of the changes coming, let’ take a look at all the benefits of Disney’s Fast Pass system, along with the cost. Installation was mostly a breeze, but I had to check some online guides to activate some more advanced features, and performance was consistently great. The motion detector, power pack and keypad were similarly reliable, and the Ring Stick Up Cam, which we've reviewed separately, performed as expected. Ring's entry sensors give a little more latitude than others, so the two pieces can be about an inch apart before registering a door "open." I appreciated that calibration because it meant no false alarms, but it wouldn't allow any doors to be cracked open without sending an alert. In addition, some of my house's doors have unique molding around the door jambs, which has given some door/window sensors problems in the past (e.g., registering doors as open when they're not). For instance, my basement's back door is far from the base station, but I experienced no connection issues with the Z-Wave-powered door/window sensor. They were responsive and reliable, even in slightly odd conditions. Ring's devices did exactly what they were supposed to do in my testing. Hobie Crase/CNET Ringing the alarm, pro-styleīefore I talk about Ring's unique features, the first big question to answer is, "Is it a decent home security system?" The answer is a solid yes. Ring suggests keeping the keypad wired, though its battery should last for months. Ditto for that Wi-Fi range extender and the microSD card, which don't make sense for other systems because those systems don't offer the same features. Likewise, you probably wouldn't spend $130 on a backup power pack for other home security systems, and you wouldn't for the Ring Alarm Pro if it didn't enable backup Wi-Fi. Remember, Ring's $250 base station is also a router, meaning you'll get a lot of extra functionality that you won't get with SimpliSafe's $115 base station. That brought me to a total bill of about $600.Ī similarly scaled build from SimpliSafe might cost $400, but it's important to understand the broader value Ring offers compared to its competitors. To give an example of one possible setup: I got the $300 Ring Alarm Pro package, along with a $100 Ring Stick Up Cam, a $130 Alarm Pro backup power pack, an $89 Eero 6 Wi-Fi range extender (on sale for $62 when I got it) and a $15 microSD card (though you can get one for free by redeeming a code after purchasing the system) for local storage. You can also buy a bigger package for $380 (it adds four more door/window sensors, an extra motion detector and another keypad), or you can buy the individual sensors a la carte, expanding the system beyond these basics to include a wide range of Ring cameras, video doorbells, backup power packs, Eero Wi-Fi range extenders and so on. You can opt for just the base station for $250 - but then you won't get all the security sensors that make the system work. If you buy the Ring Alarm Pro system, you'll probably pay $300 to get a router/base device, four door/window sensors, a motion detector, a Z-Wave range extender and a keypad. In short, the Ring Alarm Pro isn't just a game-changing device for Amazon it's a ground-shaking product for the entire DIY home security market. Ring even offers admirable data security and privacy options if, like me, you're worried about the company's spotty track record when working with police and subsequently degrading community privacy. Ring Alarm Pro is an affordable system with impressive smarts, lots of flexibility and a rock-solid base that will make most happy. Even better, you get backup Wi-Fi and local processing and storage. You also get a choice of professional monitoring subscriptions. You can either pay for the base station itself (which also serves as a router) or spend just a little more for a basic package that includes the base station, several door and window sensors, motion detectors, a keypad and a siren. Ring Alarm Pro's merging of an Eero Wi-Fi mesh router with a DIY security system gives you a lot of flexibility in arranging your setup. When CNET first evaluated The Ring Alarm Pro in late 2021, former editor David Priest proclaimed it "one of the most compelling DIY home security systems I've tested, period." But does that still (pardon the pun) ring true for 2023? Additional Fees 24/7 professional monitoring fee, recording feesĭoes Ring Alarm Pro still dial up decent value in 2023?.Voice Assistant Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant. The experiments concerned cuneiform tablets, which are challenging due to their morphological and geometrical characteristics. In this context, this research aims to meet the demand for a digital survey and 3D representation of small objects with complex surfaces and sub-millimeter morphological characteristics using a low-cost configuration (passive sensors) for an image-based approach. In the current panorama of 3D digital documentation, the survey of tiny artifacts with micrometric details is strongly influenced by two factors: firstly, the still high cost of the instruments and technologies (active sensors) required to achieve the necessary level of accuracy and resolution secondly, the needed professional skills for the macro-photogrammetric approach. Experiments shows that the proposed technique can be easily performed on the field with a resulting RTI model that can outperform state-of-the-art approaches involving dedicated hardware setups. To deal with such amount of data, we propose a neural relighting model that reconstructs object appearance for arbitrary light directions from extremely compact reflectance distribution data compressed via Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Since the led is mounted close to the camera lenses, we can infer the light direction for thousands of images by freely moving the illuminating device while observing a fiducial marker surrounding the subject. The flash led-light of one device is used to illuminate the subject while the other captures the reflectance. We propose a novel RTI method that can be carried out by recording videos with two ordinary smartphones. Such process, however, typically requires dedicated hardware setups to recover the light direction from multiple locations, making the process tedious when performed outside the lab. This can be later used to reveal surface details and interactively relight the subject. Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a popular technique that allows the recovery of per-pixel reflectance information by capturing an object under different light conditions. These benefits over current standards of best practice can be generalized to a broad range of cultural heritage material. Collaborative tests between Cultural Heritage Imaging, Hewlett- Packard Labs, and the UNESCO Prehistoric Rock-Art Sites in the Côa Valley, a World Heritage Site in Portugal, suggest this approach will be very beneficial when applied to paleolithic petroglyphs of various sizes, both in the field and in the laboratory. It permits RTI examination "in the round" in a unified, interactive, image-based representation. A complementary method of integrating digital RTI representations of subjects from multiple viewpoints is also presented. The acquisition method is simple, fast, very low cost, and easy to learn. Unlike existing PTM capture methods requiring known light source positions, we rely on the user to position a handheld light source, and recover the lighting direction from the specular highlights produced on a black sphere included in the field of view captured by the camera. One imaging method is able to acquire Polynomial Texture Maps (PTMs) of 3D rock art possessing a large range of sizes, shapes, and environmental contexts. We offer two new methods of documenting and communicating cultural heritage information using Reflection Transformation Imaging (RTI). |
